Antioxidant Therapy in Cardiovascular Diseases: Still a Matter of Debate

چکیده

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are highly reactive chemical species, which are responsible for oxidative stress inside the cell. They are mainly generated in vascular cells by NAD(P)H oxidases, uncoupled endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase, and other enzymatic sources, or as a byproduct of mitochondrial respiration. Imbalanced production of ROS lead to exacerbation of pathophysiological processes in both humans and in animal models [1]. For example, in a number of cardiovascular pathologies, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, ischemia/reperfusion injury, and restenosis after angioplasty or venous bypass grafting, excessive production of reactive oxygen species has been implicated to play an important role [2]. As ROS can be neutralized by antioxidants, many studies proposed antioxidants as a treatment option in ameliorating diseases.

Challenges for treatment of cardiovascular diseases based on stem cells

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the primary cause of death worldwide, and the development of scar tissue in myocardium and also the irreversible destruction of cardiomyocytes are the main factors in their development. There are still limitations in medical treatment of CVD, despite the advances in the field of drug therapy and surgery for CVD. In recent years, research on stem c...

Oxidative Stress in Veterinary Medicine

Oxidative stress can be regarded as an imbalance between prooxidant/free radical production and opposing antioxidant defenses. There is growing evidence that oxidative stress (OS) significantly impairs organic function and plays amajor role in the aetiology and pathogenesis of several metabolic diseases in veterinary medicine. In many of these cases, it is unclear if oxidants trigger the diseas...

Association of serum melatonin and albumin with cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of death worldwide.  Endothelial dysfunction, inflammatory conditions, and oxidative stress at the forefront of the onset and progression of most cardiovascular diseases specificaly coronary heart disease and heart failure. Melatonin is a type of indole neuroendocrine hormone.  It was first found that the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle is regulated...

Inflammatory Cytokines and type 2 diabetes

Inflammatory cytokines increase in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic syndrome. This review focuses on inflammatory cytokines such as C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and adiponectin, a cytokine produced by adipose tissue and associated with insulin sensitivity. Despite the major role of cytokines in the development of T2D, in the case of adiponectin still...

Cell Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease

Recently, cell therapy has sparked a revolution in ischemic heart disease that will in the future help clinicians to cure patients. Earlier investigations in animal models and clinical trials have suggested that positive paracrine effects such as neoangiogenesis and anti-apoptotic can improve myocardial function. In this regard the Royan cell therapy center designed a few trials in collaborat...
